Coimbatore: Though statistics revealed by the City Police Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu on Tuesday, showed that the crime graph had dipped by nearly 20 per cent, accident rates in the city have gone up in 2010. Talking to reporters, Mr. Babu said that the overall fall in the crime graph pertained to all categories of crimes. While 20 murders were committed in 2009 and all were detected, 18 were carried out but detected till the fag end of this year. Dacoity Four cases of murder-for-gain in 2009 were detected while two were reported and solved in 2010. Two cases of dacoity in 2009 were detected while this year, a lone case was solved. Reeling out figures, Mr Babu said that all the 26 cases of robbery in 2009 were detected and in 2010, of the 25 committed, as many as 23 were solved. Of the 197 cases of burglary, 142 were detected in 2009 and in 2010 of the 142 cases, detection was possible in 77. Of the 90 cases of chain snatching in 2009, as many as 76 cases were detected and in 2010, as many as 73 cases were reported and 43 detected. On two-wheeler thefts, 567 cases were reported in 2009 and 392 vehicles were restored to the owners. This year, while 465 thefts were reported, 174 cases of them were solved. Four-wheeler In the four-wheeler segment, 34 cases were brought to their notice of which 27 were detected last year while in 2010, 18 were reported and 16 detected, the Police Commissioner said. The novel modus operandi of criminals adopting diversionary tactics last year to pull off a robbery ended in three persons losing their belongings but in all the three instances, police nabbed the culprits and repeated their accomplishments with a perfect 10, solving all the four cases reported this year, Mr Babu said. In sum, 2009 witnessed 1,394 criminal cases of which 1,112 were detected and in 2010 out of the 1,235 reported, 815 have already been detected. However, cyber criminals seem to have a field day. While 93 cases were reported last year, 2010 witnessed a huge 500 per cent jump at 467 (See graphics).
