BANGALORE: The four-day national convention of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad concluded here on Tuesday with the student organisation resolving to fight corruption at the Centre even as it felicitated Anand Kumar, who started the ‘Super 30' in Bihar, with the Yeshwant Rao Kelkar Youth Award.

Mr. Kumar, who has been offering free coaching and training to 30 students every year to appear for the IIT-JEE in Bihar since 1997, said that he plans to extend the training programme across the country. Stating that his childhood heroes were scientists and not Bollywood stars, Mr. Kumar said he could offer free training with the help of his family and his old students.

Felicitating Mr. Kumar, Oscar-winner Resul Pookutty said he was privileged to present the award to one who has created an example for the nation. “We have to spread this message among our people, especially among students: ‘If he can do it I can too'. We can build a nation that can be palpable and worth living in. Mr. Anand comes from a humble background yet has achieved great success. If Anand Kumar can do it, you can do too,” Mr. Pookutty said.

He urged the student community not to become slaves of technology. Mr. Pookutty said, “During my student years, writing a thesis would require me to visit libraries, refer hundreds of books and memorise passages, whereas today, by the click of a button, I can get whatever information I want. The previous method would make a person knowledgeable whereas the latter method makes the person only informed. Our nation needs knowledgeable people along with informed people who are aware of our culture and heritage.”

Nation-wide movement

Speaking to reporters after the convention, ABVP national general secretary Umesh Datta Sharma said the parishad will launch a nation-wide movement against corruption at the Centre from January 6.

Four resolutions were passed at the convention — opposing commercialisation of education; movement against 2G spectrum and Commonwealth Games scam; celebrating Sir. M. Visvesvaraya's birth anniversary as a national event and creating awareness among students about the ill-effects of global warming, Mr. Sharma said.

To a question, ABVP national secretary Ravi Kumar said since it was a national-level convention, issues concerning the nation were discussed. During the forthcoming State-level convention in January next, corruption issues concerning the State would be the focus and suitable decisions would be taken, he said.
