AMBUR: Three policemen, who were part of an escort team from Erode, and an accused were killed when a van that they were travelling in dashed against a government bus after hitting a median on the National Highway-46 at Ambur on Wednesday.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ambur sub-division, M. Chandrasekar said four police personnel were escorting two accused detained under the Goondas Act from Erode to Chennai in the van, which was driven by a police constable-cum-driver. They were proceeding to Chennai to produce the accused before an advisory board.

Vehicle hits median

When the vehicle was nearing OAR Theatre in Ambur, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and hit the median.

“The vehicle bounced onto the median and hit a Dharmapuri-bound government bus plying from Vellore on the other side of the National Highway, killing three policemen on the spot, including the driver,” he said.

While Devakumar (41), head constable, Gunasekaran (28), police constable, and Kumaravel (28) driver-cum-constable, died on the spot, Liaqath Ali (29), one of the accused, died on the way to a hospital.

Two police constables – Karunakaran and Balakrishnan – and another accused Murugan alias Chettiyar Murugan were referred to the Government Vellore Medical College and Hospital at Adukkamparai from Ambur.

Mr. Chandrasekar said the Ambur police secured two SLR rifles and one AK-47, which the escort team had carried, from the accident spot, he added.
