CUTTACK: The city police have claimed to have busted a motorcycle theft racket and arrested five persons in this connection seizing eight stolen motorcycles from their possession.
Cops of Badambadi and Markatnagar police station of the city busted the racket after conducting joint raids at several places. While two of the arrested are motorcycle lifters and the remaining are arrested for purchasing stolen vehicles. Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, DCP A.N. Sinha said the racket was involved in lifting bikes from twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar and were disposing them of in rural areas of the district.
The arrested include Manas Mohanty (22), Bibhuti Swain (21) and Alok Mohanty (25) of Badamaba, Shraddhananda Mohanty and Sk Emma of Jajpur district, the police said.
“Susceptible and naive people in rural areas were the targets of the motorcycle lifters to dispose of the stolen vehicles and the racket was mainly operating in Banki and Badamaba areas of Cuttack district and some pockets of neighbouring Jajapur district”, the DCP said.
With the help of master keys, the members of the racket were lifting motorcycles from busy and crowded locations of the city..
The DCP further said they were hopeful of recovering some more stolen vehicles from the gang members.
