The awards consist of cash prices ranging from Rs.25,000 to Rs.50,000, apart from trophy and certificates. KOCHI: The Coconut Development Board (CDB) will give awards to individuals and groups engaged in farming, research and other associated activities. The awards consist of cash prices ranging from Rs.25,000 to Rs.50,000, apart from trophy and certificates. There will be an award for the best coconut farmer at the national level and two other awards, one each for the best farmer in the south west and north east regions. Awards have also been instituted in various categories such as coconut processor, research worker, master craftsman manufacturing coconut based handicrafts, exporter, development worker and cooperative society or non-government agency. One of the interesting categories is that of coconut palm climber. Two awards will be given in the segment , one for the best coconut climber for who uses traditional methods and the other for one who follows non-conventional methods. The Coconut Development Board has been striving to find out a solution to the problem faced by farmers in engaging climbers as the number of people who were traditionally engaged in the activity had dwindled over the years. Dwarf varieties are being promoted to overcome the problem. Various devices are also being pressed into service to help farmers or their assistants to climb the tree with a little effort. The awards for the best climbers as well as the encouragement for developing new devices for the climbing activity are expected to produce worthwhile results.
