Return of a matinee idol

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Not many would believe it.

Not even die-hard fans of actor Jayan, who died in 1980 while shooting for the film Kolilakkam. But if filmmaker Vijesh Mani is to be believed, his new film will have Jayan as hero.

The studio works, involving recreating portions featuring the late actor, are already progressing for the film titled Avataram (Incarnation). The shooting will start on January and the film will be released in April 2011.

Wait, before you start getting ideas. “Not even a single frame in the old footage featuring Jayan has been used in this film. But he is featuring in nearly 54 frames out of 60-odd total frames. All these are being recreated using modern digital techniques,” said the director.

The film is expected to cost around Rs. 2.5 to 3 crore, because of the technical details involved. But Mr. Mani is confident that the film would get impressive initial collections.

“I have been told about moves to revive Jayan's fan clubs in many parts of the State,” he says. Jayan, a former Indian Navy sailor, made his film debut in 1974 and was unchallenged matinee idol by the late seventies.
