Pay bills online, consumers told

MADURAI: To avoid getting caught in rush at electricity bill collection centres around the due dates, Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) has urged consumers to make online payment.

While available only in Chennai and Coimbatore regions so far, the facility was extended to all low-tension consumers across Tamil Nadu from December 1.

In an official release, A. Nachadalingam, Chief Engineer (Distribution) of Madurai Region, TANGEDCO, said that a general tendency existed among consumers to pay their bills only around due date resulting in heavy crowd at collection centres.

To overcome this problem, TANGEDCO had introduced various collection methodologies, listed below, for low-tension consumers.

Net banking

Now, consumers could pay their electricity bills through credit cards, debit cards and net banking.

These facilities had been enabled for account holders of the following banks, he said.

Those who wanted to use credit cards (Visa/Master) of ICICI Bank and Axis Bank would have to pay a service charge of 2.09 per cent of the bill amount.

In the case of customers using debit cards of Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank and Canara Bank, flat rate of Rs.5 (up to power bill of Rs.500) and Rs.10 (exceeding Rs.500) would be charged.

No service charge would be incurred while using the net banking facility of Indian Bank, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, City Union Bank and Indian Overseas Bank.

For making online payment, the customer should log into the TANGEDCO's official website – www.tneb.in – and register themselves (free of charge), after which payments could be made online round the clock.

Consumers could view their Current Consumption and payment status by going to https://www.tnebnet.org/newlt/menu2.html, choosing their respective region and then entering their 10-digit service number. Talks were under way with other major banks such as State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, HDFC Bank and Karur Vysya Bank to extend this facility.
