Award for railway doctor

Dr. N. Vijayakumar

TIRUCHI: N. Vijayakumar, a senior Anaesthesiologist in Golden Rock Railway Hospital here was presented Dr. A.M. Ray Memorial Oration Award and a medal for his oration on ‘Pain Relief in Labour' at the 16 {+t} {+h} annual Railway Forum of Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists (RFISA) conference held at Varanasi early this month. The award was given to Dr. Vijayakumar in appreciation of his oration as well as for his technique called Epidural Analgesia in pain relief during child birth at the Golden Rock Railway Hospital here.

The award was given by the Chief Medical Director, North Eastern Railway Dr. Hastimal Jain in the presence of Dr. Chandralekha, Professor & HoD of Anaesthesiology, AIIMS, New Delhi. By this technique, the Epidural Catheter is inserted near the spinal cord and local anaesthetic is injected through the catheter . The catheter is connected to a syringe infusion pump filled with local anaesthetic and an opioid. Through this method, the patient experiences 100 per cent pain relief, says Dr. Vijayakumar .
