Revellers to be under the watchful eyes of the police

V.S. Palaniappan

COIMBATORE: Every year, Coimbatoreans pour into the streets to herald the New Year. A host of events, ranging from those organised at resorts, hotels to those at homes, mark New Year's Eve. But the watchful eyes of the police ensure that celebrations do not turn sour.

Hotels and other buildings are illuminated from Christmas Eve to New Year and every section sets about the task of organising various events that continue well into the early hours of what is welcomed as a year of good health, peace and prosperity.

But, even as the city's roads erupt into celebrations, with mostly the youth turning the occasion colourful, the police keep a close watch on revellers so that the beginning of the New Year does not turn sour or tragic. Police say their intention is not to play spoilsport by curbing the celebrations. But, these should not turn dangerous for the revellers themselves, City Police Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu explains.

There will be a total crackdown on drunk driving and speeding. The city will witness a tight security blanket and vehicle checks for almost every two or three km.

Those found driving under the influence of alcohol will have to wait at a police station till the effect of alcohol wears off in the morning. Revellers breaching the barriers of decency on roads and public places during the celebrations will also spend the night in police stations, he says.

Those misbehaving with women and preventing police from performing their duty in the name of celebrations will be booked, the Commissioner warned.

More than 3,000 police personnel will be on duty across the city from late Friday evening. Deputy Commissioners of Police N. Kamini (Crime and Traffic), E.S. Uma (Head Quarters and Law and Order) and Valli Nayagam (Armed Reserve) will head the vigil. Nearly 200 Home Guards and 60 Traffic Wardens will be on crowd control and traffic management.
