THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Assembly on Thursday passed the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies Bill, 2010, seeking to replace an ordinance of the same name promulgated earlier for setting up a university devoted to studies in fisheries and ocean sciences. Presenting the Bill, as reported by the Subject Committee of the House, Fisheries Minister S. Sarma said the new university would focus on graduate and post-graduate teaching and research programmes in emerging disciplines of fisheries science. It would introduce specialised courses in areas where the country's fisheries sector required professional expertise. He said that Kerala was already the hub of fisheries and marine products exports in the country. The share of fisheries sector to the Agricultural Domestic Product of the State came to nearly 10 per cent. A university exclusively devoted to this field of science would help the development of appropriate technologies and trained manpower to make the sector more vibrant than at present. Members from both the Treasury benches and the Opposition welcomed the setting up of the university.
