Coimbatore: Commissioner of Railway Safety K.J.S. Naidu along with Divisional Railway Manager, Salem, P.N. Ram on Wednesday inspected the Coimbatore – Mettupalayam section. The officials inspected the nearly 40-km stretch of the track from Coimbatore to Mettupalayam and returned to Coimbatore. The objective of the exercise was to check the strength of the track and safety standards. The section earlier had only one pair of train and from June 2010 three pairs of special trains are running every day except Sundays. With the increased traffic on one of the oldest sections, the section has been taken up for inspection, officials said. Officials added that wooden sleepers were being replaced with concrete sleepers besides taking up maintenance works of the section in terms of the rolling stock on the section. This would enhance the strength of the section and then the officials could also think of increasing the running speed of the train. Proposal Mr. Ram told reporters at Mettupalayam that a proposal had been sent to the Railway Board for extending the special train as the three-month extension was getting over on December 31. Meanwhile, the Salem Division announced that the three pairs of special trains between Coimbatore and Mettupalayam had been extended up to March 31, 2011. As the train was enjoying more than the required occupancy ratio, Salem Division had already proposed making the service a permanent one. Mr. Ram added that owing to constraints faced in sourcing spare parts for the steam engine for the Mettupalayam – Coonoor Nilgiris Mountain Railway, the proposal to replace the old engines was getting delayed. New engines would replace the old engines shortly. The inspection on Wednesday gains significance in the wake of persistent requests for increasing the coaches and frequency of the Coimbatore – Mettupalayam – Coimbatore special trains and also for running them on Sundays. The public had been demanding that the trains should be made a permanent service and also for re-opening of the Urumandapalayam, Pudupalayam and Thudiyalur stations en-route for the mutual benefit of railways and the public. The Salem Division had already said that the services would soon be made permanent and on getting approval steps would be taken to re-open the stations en-route. Patronage Plea for running the train on Sundays could not be conceded because of the time required for the maintenance of the engine and coaches. The battered stretch of the Coimbatore – Mettupalayam Road and the ongoing relaying and widening works are increasing the patronage for this train.
