dated December 31, 1960: Earnings from exports

Mr. Satish Chandra, Deputy Minister of Commerce and Industry, said in Calcutta on December 30 that a lasting solution to the problems of perennial trade deficits could be found only by stepping up our export earnings. He told the annual meeting of the Engineering Export Promotion Council that we should step up our exports even if it meant denying ourselves some of the good things of life, because, as we were situated, our export earnings were barely enough for maintenance requirements over the Plan period. He asked the Council to concentrate more attention on Asia and Africa, which offered a vast potential market for light engineering goods.
