Deepika Kumari outclasses A. Surmila Devi for girls' recurve title

NEW DELHI: Mukesh Tamang defeated Ajay in the final of the boys' recurve section to emerge champion in the 33rd National junior archery championship at the Yamuna Sports Complex here on Thursday.

For Services boy Tamang, who won 7-2, the gold medal was a satisfactory achievement. However, it was Ajay who held centrestage with his silver medal feat.

Eighteen-year-old Ajay, who defeated other promising archers like Hemanta Basumatary and Raj Govind Swansi of Services on his way to the final, was delighted with his first-ever medal at the National level.

“I am happy to get it. This will help me to do better in future,” he said.

In the city not known for archery, Ajay was hand-picked and groomed by coach Ram Kumar Sherawat. “Our main problem is that we do not have a ground where we can practise regularly,” said Ajay, who belongs to the Wazirpur slums in outer Delhi.
