Demonstration: A fire fighting drill at Indian Oil Corporation's Irugur terminal oil plant on Thursday. Coimbatore: A drill as part of disaster control management plan was conducted at the Indian Oil Corporation's Irugur terminal plant on Thursday. The objective of the exercise was to assess the preparedness and reaction mode of all agencies concerned in the event of an emergency disaster situation. The drill will also help in fine tuning the system and in plugging the loopholes in the response system. In total, it was aimed at ensuring total preparedness for effective execution of disaster control management plan for any eventuality. The mock drill took place in the presence of Deputy Chief Inspector of Factories – Division II K. Kaliyannan. Representatives from the agencies concerned such as Bharat Petroleum, Hindusthan Petroleum, CCK Petronet, IOCL officials from the Kinathukkadavu bottling plant, Fire and Rescue Services personnel, police and medical services were present discharging their role in a disaster situation. The drill was led by K.V. Ramanamoorthy, Chief Terminal Manager, and an imaginary fire was spotted in the diesel tank 4 by P. Chandran – Manager Operations. The next 30-minute was a precision perfect demonstration of the situation with combat, rescue and auxiliary team of IOCL swung into action. The fire fighting team used the dry chemical type fire extinguishers, state of the art fire hydrant such as 2,400 litres of mobile multi-purpose foam monitor. The hydrant system located inside the terminal was used to cool the nearby tank lorry filling bays and petroleum tanks. All agencies such as Fire and Rescue Services, paramedical and medical teams rushed swiftly taking control of the situation. Within half-an-hour normalcy was restored. At the de-briefing the officials discussed the strengths and weaknesses.
