Job fair attracts thousands of applicants

COIMBATORE: Thousands of youth thronged the CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex here on Thursday as more than 100 enterprises recruited welders, turners, supervisors, store keepers and machinists.

Of the 5,230 applicants who participated in the Job Fair 2010 organised by the Coimbatore District Small industries Association in association with the District Industries Centre of Udhagamandalam and Coimbatore, and the District Employment Office – Ooty, 1,340 were recruited.

According to M. Kandhaswami, President of the association, the recruiting companies were processing 1,120 more applications. About 135 companies, including the CODISSIA members and large-scale companies here from various sectors such as pumpsets, and textile machinery participated.

They wanted candidates who had studied up to minimum Class VIII and maximum a diploma. But, engineering students also participated. As many as 15 of them received appointment orders at the fair. Candidates came from Coimbatore, Salem, Krishnagiri, the Nilgiris, Namakkal, etc. Most of the companies were able to get candidates according to their requirements. The minimum salary offered was Rs. 3,500 a month.

The Inspector General of Police – West Zone P. Sivanandi said that as many as 529 unemployed youth were brought to the Fair by the police from Coimbatore, Erode, the Nilgiris, Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts. Of the 529 candidates for skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled jobs 488 were men and 41 were women. There were more youth from Coimbatore and the Nilgiris while there was none from Tirupur.

Of the 402 tribal candidates brought by the police, 230 had received appointment orders and 130 applications were being processed.

Mr. Kandhaswami said the association planned to organise the event regularly and an exclusive job fair for engineers.
