Soldier fatally hit by train

TAMBARAM: A soldier of the Indian Army died on the spot after he was hit by an EMU at Pallavaram railway station on Thursday morning.

Government Railway Police said Elumalai (45), a havildar of the Army, was stationed in Rajasthan. A native of Katpadi, Vellore, he had come to Chennai recently. He was staying in the Army Camp in Pallavaram. On Thursday, he was waiting at the Pallavaram station to take a train to Fort St. George.

He received a call on his mobile and attended to it, when a train bound for Chennai Beach approached the station. Citing eye witnesses' report, police said Elumalai continued to speak on the mobile phone and was simply unaware of the approaching train. Elumalai was standing on the edge of the platform when the accident occurred.
