Kochi: The agitating employees of HMT Machine Tools at Kalamassery welcomed the appointment of G.K. Pillai as its new chairman. “When there remains only two more days for the HMT employees' strike to complete a calendar year, the Central government has made real an important demand, the installation of professional management,” the protesting employees said in a media hand-out. Following a government order to that effect, Mr. Pillai, at present chairman and managing director (CMD) of Heavy Engineering Corporation, Ranchi, took on the additional charge of chairman of the ailing HMT Machine Tools. Mr. Pillai, credited with turning around the HEC, is likely to visit the corporate head office of HMT in Bangalore on Friday. The agitating employees, however, noted that the stir would continue until all demands such as pay revision and reversion of age of superannuation were met.
