Uproar in Dindigul municipal council meeting

Staff Reporter

DINDIGUL: The Communists Party of India (Marxist) and the AIADMK Councillors walked out of the municipal council meeting held here on Thursday condemning various anti-people activities of the municipality.

The Dindigul Municipal Council's normal and emergency meetings were presided over by the Municipal Chairman, R. Natarajan.

At the outset, CPI(M) Councillor and Vice-Chairman V. Kalyanasundaram urged Dindigul Municipality not to privatise maintenance of Athoor Kamarajar Dam, lifeline for Dindigul, and drinking water pumps at the dam site. The municipality should maintain it on its own in order to prevent illegal tapping of dam water. He informed the council that local people had drained a large quantum of water into a supply channel leading to Pulvetti Kulam near Sempatti in collusion with contractors.

Earlier, the council was discussing about renewing the contract for maintenance of dam at an estimated cost of for Rs.10 lakh per annum. When the chairman refused to oblige, the CPI(M) Councillors staged a walk out.

When the council tabled a subject on sanctioning of additional funds of Rs.2 lakh for deputing 40 sanitary workers besides private contractors, the AIADMK Councillors condemned inaction of the municipality and poor work of the contractors.
