Congress leaders join dharna by sugarcane ryots

Staff Reporter

SANGAREDDY: Led by former Minister Mohd. Fariduddin scores of sugarcane farmers staged a dharna in front of the Trident Sugar Factory near Zaheerabad seeking higher price for the produce than what was offered by the factory management.

Sugarcane farmers in Zaheerabad area were seeking Rs. 2,500 per tonne for the produce supplied by them. However, the management was offering only Rs. 2,050. Repeated meetings held by the district administration as well as Major Industries Minister J. Geeta Reddy to convince the factory management did not yield any result.

The sugarcane farmers had blocked the highway few days ago and had organised a relay fast for the past 40 days.

In an embarrassment to the district administration, sugarcane farmers from the area recently filed a petition against the Minister as well as the district authorities with the State Human Rights Commission which posted the case for hearing on February 7, 2011.

Worried over the development, the Congress leaders stepped in and held a dharna before the factory today. They also gave 48 hours time to the management to pay at least the price offered last year -- Rs. 2,250 per tonne -- if not the amount sought by the farmers.

The Congress leaders warned that they would be forced to chalk out their action plan if the management did not concede their demand.

‘Congress drama'

Surprisingly, none other than the farmers supporting the Congress participated in the agitation
