KHAMMAM: The government has released Rs. 47.95 crore towards input subsidy to as many as 2,24,661 farmers for crop damages caused by the series of natural calamities in the district up to November 2010. Giving these details at a press conference held here on Saturday evening, Collector N. Nageshwara Rao said that the input subsidy was released towards the total crop losses in 1.09 lakh hectares on account of drought in kharif 2009, different spells of heavy rains, “Laila” and “Jal” cyclone devastations besides the floods in Godavari in 2010. The input subsidy would be disbursed in a few days to the affected farmers. Proposals Separate proposals have already been sent to the government for sanction of input subsidy towards the extensive crop damages in about 1.13 lakh hectares caused by the recent cyclone induced heavy rains in the district in December, 2010, he said. “Though the district has achieved the kharif target, the farmers could not harness the benefits of the same due to the natural fury,” he said and added that paddy including the discoloured and damaged paddy was being procured at the paddy purchase centres set up at various parts of the district. “Nine farmers have died due to crop losses caused by the recent heavy rains in the district,” he said when asked about the total number of distressed farmers those either committed suicide or died of heart attack due to the present crisis. Inquiry reports The revenue officials have been asked to submit the inquiry reports pertaining to the remaining reported instances of suicides by the farmers in the district, he said. Identity cards Joint Director of Agriculture K. Hema Maheshwara Rao said that the crops of about 11, 735 tenant farmers were damaged in about 8,635 hectares owing to the recent heavy rains in the district. “The remaining tenant farmers if any leftover would be identified soon,” he said and added that identity cards would be issued to all the tenant farmers during the ensuing “Revenue Sadassulu” for provision of crop insurance, input subsidy and loans to them.
