117 monuments in State identified for restoration

Mysore: The State Archaeology Department will restore 117 monuments in Karnataka at an estimated cost of Rs. 100 crore in the next four years.

Disclosing this, R. Gopal, Director, Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, told The Hindu that the 13th Finance Commission has sanctioned Rs. 100 crore as a grant-in-aid for Karnataka towards conservation of monuments and also development of museums.

Under the project, the Government Museum at Bangalore established in the late 1860s is poised for extension. And, in the Venkatappa Art Gallery, Bangalore, solar lighting equipment will be installed.

The State Archaeology Department will take up reorientation and improvement of the auditorium of the Directorate's headquarters in Mysore; improve the Kittur Rani Channamma Memorial Government Museum at Kittur in Belgaum district; and the Government Museum at Gulbarga, which is housed in a 14th century monument, will be also developed and provided with solar lighting and landscaping.

The project covers both protected and unprotected monuments in the State, according to Mr. Gopal.

In all, 25 monuments in Mysore division, 20 monuments of importance in the Bangalore division, 45 monuments in Belgaum division, and 27 monuments in the Gulbarga division have been identified for conservation.

As per the action plan, the authorities intend to spend Rs. 20 crore each in Mysore, Bangalore, Belgaum and Gulbarga divisions to start with, according to Mr. Gopal.
