Villagers get birth certificates

Special Correspondent

TIMELY INITIATIVE: R. Navamoorthy, Disitrict Munsif, giving away birth certificate to a differently abled girl at Alavayal .

PUDUKOTTAI: A directive by the Tirumayam Taluk Legal Services Committee to the authorities to issue birth certificates to needy persons, brought relief to a group of villagers in and around Tirumayam the other day. A total of 150 persons got the birth certificates at a function organised by the committee at Alavayal village recently.

Speaking after distributing the certificates, R. Navamoorthy, District Munsif and chairman of the committee, explained the steps being taken by the committee for creating awareness on free legal aid. Most petitions received by the committee pertained to a plea for the issue of birth certificates by competent authorities. The committee nominated a lawyer to ensure the issue of certificate. All the data was verified and authorities issued the certificates to the needy.

Mr. Navamoorthy emphasised the need for creating awareness about the importance of birth certificates. The committee has settled 70 disputes during 2010. Disputes involving dishonour of cheques had been settled this year.
