Concern over rising maternal mortality rate

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Societies of India on Sunday expressed concern over the high rate of maternal mortality and increasing Caesarean sections.

Doctors addressed a press conference to announce the 54 {+t} {+h} all-India congress of obstetrics & gynaecology (AICOG) being organised at HICC here from January 5 to 9 by the federation. The Obstetrics & Gynaecological Society of Hyderabad will host the conference with the theme, ‘Save the girl child' & reduce maternal mortality'.

Concerted effort

Giving an insight into the two issues, AICOG chairperson P. Balamba and organising secretary S. Shantha Kumar said both warrant a concerted effort for improvement.

Maternal mortalities took place for two reasons, they said, with the first being unpreparedness of people to think of an emergency situation and plan in advance. In many cases, by the time the pregnant mother was brought to hospital, it would be too late. The other constraint was lack of fast and safe transport.

As for Caesarean sections, the World Health Organisation wished that 85 per cent of deliveries should be normal and only 15 per cent could be Caesarean. Dr. Balamba said while the ratio was being maintained in tune with WHO standards in district hospitals, the rate in other bigger government, teaching hospitals was between 25 and 35 per cent.
