Rehman, Kajal claim titles

HYDERABAD: Abdul Rehman of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar's Kajal Kumari emerged champions in the junior boys' and girls' sections respectively in the 39 {+t} {+h} junior and youth National carom championship at Dehradun on Sunday.

Rehman, who lost to K. Srinivas of Hyderabad in the previous edition, exacted revenge by winning 13-12, 21-8 after the first game was taken to ‘sudden-death' with the scores at 12-all.

Mohd. Hassan of Chandigarh clinched the bronze defeating Mohd. Danish of Delhi 21-5, 13-8.

In the junior final, last year's runner-up and current sub-junior National champion Kajal cruised past seventh-seeded M. Kanagdhara of Tamil Nadu 21-9, 21-0.

P. Jayashree of Tamil Nadu pipped defending champion Dipika Sinha of Bihar 6-21, 21-5, 12-21 to the third spot.

Khushboo Kumari of Jharkhand defeated K. Karn of Bihar 21-3, 21-6 in the youth girls' final.

The results: Junior boys: Final: Abdul Rehman (UP) bt K. Srinivas (Hyd) 13-12, 21-8. Semifinals: Srinivas bt Mohd. Danish (Dli) 11-8, 21-2; Rehman bt Mohd. Hassan (Chd) 16-8, 21-2. Youth boys: Final: Md. Gufran (UP) bt Sk. Wasim (Vid) 21-5, 19-5; Third place: V. Akash (Orissa) bt. Mohd. Salman (Delhi) 2-18, 21-07, 14-12.

Semifinals: Gufran bt Salman 21-9, 21-3; Wasim bt Akash 14-10, 21-1.

Junior girls: Final: Kajal Kumari (Bih) bt M. Kanagdhara (TN) 21-9, 21-0; Semifinals: Kanagdhara bt Dipika Sinha (Bih) 13-7, 1-19, 21-7; Kajal bt P. Jayashree (TN) 16-14, 19-11.

Youth girls: Final: Khushboo Kumari (Jhar) bt K. Karn (Bih) 21-3, 21-6; Semifinals: Karn bt A. Swathi (Hyd) 15-12, 21-6; Khushboo bt Kamna Gupta (UP) 17-6, 21-5 .
