THANJAVUR: Government's multimedia exhibitions are not for publicity purpose, but to inform people about the various welfare schemes being implemented by the State, so that the people may benefit out of them, said S.S.Palani Manickam, Union Minister of State for Finance, after inaugurating the fair at Thilakar Thidal, here on Sunday. The Tamil Nadu Government has fulfilled all its poll promises. Government has waived the Rs. 7000 crore cooperative loans, provided rice at Rs.1 a kg, distributed free colour television sets and currently is in the process of constructing concrete houses, the Minister said . "Being a Union Minister, I've travelled throughout the country and visited several states. . No State government in the north had provided wheat for Re.1 a kg. In rice eating states like Orissa, there is no scheme to provide rice at Rs.1a kg . This showed that the Tamil Nadu government is different and is providing a welfare State" the Minister said. S.N.M.Ubayathullah, State Commercial Taxes Minister, said the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi has increased the amount given for construction of concrete houses from Rs.60, 000 to Rs.75,000. It may be further increased. M.S.Shanmugham, Collector, said 25 government departments have put up stalls in the exhibition. Women SHGs have displayed their products for sale in the exhibition. Agriculture and Horticulture department have setup stalls that sell saplings of various crops for the benefit of farmers and general public. The Minister distributed benefits worth Rs.1.02 crore to people . He also released a booklet on the achievements of the government. T.Selvam, chairman, Thanjavur Marketing Committee and Selvi Sivagnanam, chairperson, Thanjavur District Panchayat Council, spoke.
