Suri shot dead in his own car

Marri Ramu

Murder allegedly committed by his associate

BRUTAL MURDER: A police inspector has a look at the bloodstained seat in Suri's car in Hyderabad on Monday.

HYDERABAD: Gangula Suryanarayana Reddy alias Maddelacheruvu Suri, the prime accused in the murder of former Minister and Telugu Desam MLA Paritala Ravi, was shot dead in his car, allegedly by his own associate, Bhanu Kiran, at Navodaya Colony, Banjara Hills, here on Monday evening.

Two bullets were pumped into his head from close range from behind when the car was in motion. Suri immediately slumped on the driver, Madan Mohan Reddy. He was rushed in the same car to Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hills where he succumbed to the bullet wounds, said City Police Commissioner A.K. Khan.

Suri was attacked when he was returning from Balanagar where he had gone to meet his advocate and was proceeding to Madhuranagar-Krishnanagar road, near Yousufguda. “I ducked on hearing gunshots as Suri slumped on me. Bhanu shouted at me to speed away saying we were being attacked,” the driver told the police. Bhanu jumped out and disappeared when the driver stopped the car after some distance.

Mr. Khan said the car windows were rolled up and there was no indication of any shots being fired from outside. “Bhanu is an important suspect and could reveal crucial details,” he said. Special police teams were pressed into action to nab Bhanu and also authenticate the driver's version.

The slain factionalist hailing from Anantapur had trusted Madan Mohan Reddy and Bhanu while his original driver Durga Prasad reportedly took the day off on some work.

Suri was the kingpin behind the Jubilee Hills bomb blast on November 19, 1997. Twenty six persons, including the crew of a television channel (ETV), were killed and 20 injured when an explosive was triggered in a car using a remote control device, close to Rama Naidu's studio.

His target was arch rival Paritala Ravi, who was attending the launch of the film ‘Sri Ramulaiah', a story based on his father and being produced by him. Suri was arrested, sentenced to life and later released.

Paritala Ravi, who had managed to escape with minor injuries then, was brutally killed, in the Telugu Desam Party office in January 2005. Suri was held again in connection with the former Minister's murder.

Conditional bail

He was enlarged a few months ago on conditional bail in the murder case which is being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

He has been shuttling between Bangalore and Hyderabad and living in an apartment at Madhapur here.
