CPI(M) plans protest for ration cards

Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM: Under the leadership of CITU, AIDWA, DYFI and Visakha Poura Samkshema Sangham, affiliated to the CPI(M), a 48-hour dharna was launched at the Collectorate on Monday demanding restoration of white ration cards and pension and regularisation of house-sites under GO 166. CPI(M) district Ch. Narsinga Rao visited the dharna camp.

In a memorandum to the District Collector, B. Padma, B. Ganga Rao, M. Jaggu Naidu and others said 20,000 white ration cards were weeded out in the name of a drive to remove bogus cards and in spite of several pleas were not restored. The poor were going without food as they had no ration cards and the prices of essential commodities had gone up. They were demanding restoration of pensions to 7,000 persons, poor and the aged, widows and differently abled. Pensions are being denied to them for the past five months on one ground or the other. Also though two years have elapsed since the submission of applications for regularisation of house-sites under GO 166, no inquiries are conducted. They demanded the intervention of the District Collector to restore benefits given before Assembly elections.
