Priority being accorded to minorities: Congress MP

Tuticorin: The Central and State Governments were according priority to the minorities for availing themselves of benefits through various welfare schemes. All benefits reached them accordingly, according to E.M. Sudarsana Natchiyappan, Rajya Sabha MP of the Congress.

After reviewing the disbursal of welfare scheme assistance for the minorities at a meeting with officials concerned at the Collectorate here on Tuesday, he said as many as 3,35,666 people across the district were enjoying the benefits through schemes.

Besides, the noon meal scheme was also extended to students. Of the total population of 4,50,000 in Tuticorin district, the minorities, including 2,62,718 Christians, 72,875 Muslims, 52 Sikhs and 21 Buddhists, were availing themselves of benefits from schemes. Education assistance to the tune of Rs.2.67 crore was extended to the minorities. Bank loan of Rs.176 crore was provided to them for education through nationalised banks. Besides, employment opportunities and skill development training was also being imparted to them.

Through cooperative banks, Rs.2.51 crore was given. Collector C.N. Maheswaran and other officials attended the programme.
