Expectant:Large crowds waiting outside the counting centre in Chitradurga on Tuesday. Chitradurga: It is now a hung zilla panchayat in Chitradurga with no political party gaining a majority in the 34-member ZP. The Congress, which was hoping to retain its majority, won the highest number of seats but failed to get a majority. In counting held here on Tuesday, it emerged that the party won 16 seats as compared to the 19 it won last election. The Janata Dal (Secular) lost five seats from last time, winning in only six. It is now expected that the Congress and the Janata Dal (S) will join hands to take over the ZP. The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the major gainer here by winning 12 seats. Taluk panchayats Besides, the BJP opened its account in taluks where it had little presence. Of the 129 taluk panchayat seats, the BJP won in 58, followed by the Congress in 34 and the Janata Dal (S) in 24 seats, while independents got 13 seats. Of the six TPs, the BJP got a majority in Molakalmur by winning 9 of 12 seats, Chitradurga by winning 14 of 27 seats and Holalkere by winning 12 of 19 seats. It is a hung TP in Challakere, Hiriyur and Hosadurga. The election in Hosadurga and Hiriyur had been closely followed as both the taluks are represented by independent MLAs and former Ministers who were suspended following alleged anti-party activities against the BJP. In Hosadurga, the former Minister Gulihatti Shekhar had fielded independent candidates in all five ZPs and 20 TPs, but only two candidates for TP polls won.
