BJP decries closure of bridge

Staff Reporter

KARAIKAL: The Bharatiya Janatha Party condemned the Puducherry government and the Regional Transport Office, for the closure of the Thirumalairajanar bridge to their alleged ‘callousness', here in Karaikal on Tuesday.

The protests spearheaded by M.Arulmurugan, State President, Industrial and Commerce wing of the BJP, Puducherry, criticised the ‘short-sightedness' of the Puducherry government for the current situation.

According to Mr.Arulmurugan, the 150-year-old bridge could have been saved had the government pushed for its reconstruction along with the works completed for the Arasalar bridge, after the latter was washed away in the Tsunami.

According to the BJP, the RTO was equally ‘culpable' for its ‘failure' to restrain the movement of the coal-laden, multi-tonne trucks to the Karaikal Port, all of which further weakened the bridge.

Further the BJP cadre, after staging street-corner campaigns in three different locations in the district, headed to the RTO in a bid to shut down the transport office that had ‘failed' to prevent the eventuality that befell the bridge.

However, they were restrained by the police.

The Thirumalairajanar bridge, the only straight link connecting the northern and the southern part of Nagapattinam district and thereby providing a link to the other districts, was declared defunct on safety grounds and closed in the late hours of December 31.

Travel has become circuitous and unwieldy ever since the closure of the 150-year-old bridge, causing hardships to the public.
