All parties blame dissent for their poor show in polls

Staff Correspondent

Bidar: Infighting, lack of discipline and revolt seem to have affected the fortunes of all the three parties in the local body elections.

In the 31-member Bidar Zilla Panchayat, the Bharatiya Janata Party won 18 seats, Janata Dal (S) five and the Congress two. Independents have won six seats, next only to the BJP.

“Our performance in Humnabad and Bidar is poor because of infighting among leaders. Voters have not rejected our candidates,” said the BJP leader and vice-president of the State Federation of Souharda Cooperative Banks, Gurunath Jantikar. Congress leaders speak in a similar tone. “We have won two out of 31 seats. It cannot get worse than this,” said Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee member Basheeruddin Halhipparga.

“There is only one reason for our dismal performance and that is inefficiency of our leaders,” he said. According to him, the party did not take the polls seriously. Leaders did not choose right candidates and failed to form committees to supervise the election, selection of candidates, campaigning and publicity. “The party leadership deprived me of my rightful claim to the ticket. But I have proved them wrong by winning as an independent,” said Sanju Kalekar, a Janata Dal (S) rebel. The Janata Dal (S) leaders failed to pick the right candidates and conduct an aggressive campaign. Senior leaders campaigned only in a few constituencies in which they had fielded their followers. They neglected the ordinary workers, said its leader Raju Kadyal, who fielded his wife Shashikala as an independent after she was denied a party ticket.
