MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu State Council for Technical Education is pursuing a proposal to bring uniformity in the functioning of Anna Universities in the State by evolving a common pattern. A meeting of Vice-Chancellors of Anna Universities of Technology is being convened in Chennai on Thursday to discuss the issue of ‘common agenda,' including fee structure, examinations and curriculum for varsities in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi and Tirunelveli. The Vice-Chancellors' meeting would be chaired by M. S. Palanichamy, Vice-Chairman, Tamil Nadu State Council for Technical Education. Talking to The Hindu here on Tuesday, R. Murugesan, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University of Technology, Madurai, said that the council had sent a communication about the proposed common features. “We will discuss the possibility of having a common date for opening of engineering colleges/universities, common examination dates and fee structure for various courses. Curriculum also is one of the items for discussion. The council is contemplating bringing uniformity for convenience,” Dr. Murugesan said. Function postponed Meanwhile, the foundation stone laying ceremony for the permanent campus of Anna University of Technology (AUT) Madurai has been postponed to this month-end. It was originally scheduled for January 8. Nearly 84 acres of land has been allotted by the State government/district administration at Kodikulam (Alagarkoil Road) here for the AUT. The Vice-Chancellor said that the date for laying the foundation stone would be fixed in the next few days. The Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, Union Ministers and the State Minister for Higher Education were among those invited for the function to be held in Madurai. Dr. Murugesan informed that the fund allotted for construction of buildings was expected to be released towards the end of this month. “We are taking steps to introduce more postgraduate courses in AUT-Madurai from coming academic year,” he said. Valuation of answer scripts undergraduate/postgraduate semester examinations of engineering courses would begin on January 17 at six centres under the aegis of AUT-Madurai. According to the Vice-Chancellor, the results would be published by January 31. The AUT-Madurai covers 36 engineering colleges in five districts — Madurai, Sivaganga, Dindigul, Theni and Ramanathapuram.
