Nod for 10 new ultrasound scanning centres

Staff Reporter

District-level regulatory committee scrutinises applications

KAKINADA: The district-level regulatory committee on the implementation of the Prenatal Sex Determination Tests (regulation and prevention of misuse) Act that met here on Tuesday granted permission to set up 10 new ultrasound scanning centres in the district after scrutinising 11 applications.

The committee, headed by district Collector M. Ravi Chandra, screened four applications seeking restoration of registration. Of the seven applications seeking appointment of consultants, the committee rejected three applications on the ground that the consultants were not fully qualified.

Awareness meet

A decision was taken to conduct an awareness meeting to the representatives of all the 196 ultrasound scanning centres in the district to explain them the nitty-gritty of the Act.

Mr. Ravi Chandra said that ultrasound scanning should be conducted as per the guidelines issued by the government and the prenatal sex determination was considered as offence. Imprisonment of three years and a fine of Rs. 10,000 would be levied on those who resorted to the offence. In the event of repetition of the same offence, the accused would be liable to be punished with an imprisonment of five years and a fine of Rs. 50,000, he explained. He asked the officials to implement the Act strictly. District Medical and Health Officer D. Vijay Kumar and others were present.
