CHIKMAGALUR: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged victorious in the Chikmagalur zilla panchayat election. The BJP has won 25 of the 34 seats in the zilla panchayat. The Congress has won six seats and the Janata Dal (Secular) two. An independent candidate has won from Saraswatipura constituency in Kadur taluk. This is the first time that the BJP has assumed control of the panchayat. It won only four seats in the previous election. Savita Ramesh of the Congress has the distinction of getting elected thrice to the panchayat. She did not contest in 2000 and has won on all the three occasions. In the taluk panchayat election, the BJP has secured absolute majority in Chikmagalur, Kadur, Mudigere and Koppa taluks. The Congress has the opportunity of entering into an alliance with the Janata Dal (S) in Tarikere, Sringeri and N.R. Pura taluks. Sringeri and N.R. Pura taluks, which are part of the Sringeri Assembly constituency, have thrown up identical results. Of the 11 seats, the BJP and the Congress have secured five seats each and the rest by the Janata Dal (S). Of the 20 seats in Chikmagalur taluk panchayat, the BJP has bagged 11, the Congress and Janata Dal (S) have secured four each and the Bahujan Samaj Party one. The BJP has won 13 of the 24 seats in Kadur taluk panchayat. The Congress and Janata Dal (S) have secured four and six seats each and an independent candidate bagged one. In Mudigere taluk, BJP candidates have won seven seats, the Congress five and the Janata Dal (S) one. The BJP has emerged as the single largest party in Tarikere by winning eight of the 20 seats. The Congress has secured seven and the Janata Dal (S) three seats. Independent candidates have bagged two seats. In Koppa taluk, the BJP's performance has been impressive. It has won nine of the 11 seats, the remaining two by Janata Dal (S).
