Lakshadweep Fest to begin tomorrow

Staff Reporter

MALAPPURAM: Calicut University will conduct an exclusive zonal arts festival for Lakshadweep on January 7, 8 and 9. The Lakshadweep Fest, also called E-zone fest, will be held at Androth.

This will be the first youth festival of similar nature to be held on the island. Till last year, Lakshadweep was part of the B-zone comprising colleges in Kozhikode district. Because of geographical inconvenience, islanders rarely used to attend the zonal youth festivals.

“Now that they will have a platform of their own, the winners can compete in the inter-zone festival to be held in Kozhikode city in the first week of February,” said P.V. Valsaraj, Dean of Student Welfare.

As many as 250 islanders are expected to attend the Lakshadweep Fest. Vice-Chancellor Anwar Jahan Zuberi will inaugurate the festival. The first day will be devoted to off-stage events. Stage events will begin on Saturday. A delegation is expected to leave campus for Lakshadweep on Wednesday to make arrangements.

Prof. Zuberi released the logo of the E-zone fest at a function held on the campus on Tuesday. Mohammed Shafi Quraishi, organising committee convener, accepted the logo from Prof. Zuberi.

P. Vaseef, Calicut University union chairman, presided. Calicut University Syndicate member P.J. Binash, Joint Registrar (planning and development) K.P. Sasikumar, Vice-Chancellor's personal secretary Susan Chacko, and Mr. Valsaraj attended the function.
