The station is intended to cater to the power requirements of CIAL at least for the next 15-20 years Nedumbassery: Work on the 110 kV hybrid power sub-station at Nedumbassery, developed by Cochin International Airport limited (CIAL), is set to be commissioned soon. According to CIAL, the station is intended to cater to the power requirements of CIAL at least for the next 15-20 years. With a number of projects coming up under its master plan that also included an industrial park, electricity consumption by the airport company is set to multiply by many times. Located on a 1.3-acre property opposite the entry point road to the airport, the station building comprises a control panel room and a supervisory control and data acquisition unit with automated facilities. In addition, a diesel generator set along with a transformer will be installed as back up facility in the control room to be manned by staff from CIAL on a round-the-clock basis. Two state-of-the-art ABB PASS (plug and switch) system with aluminium composite panel were imported from Italy at a cost of Rs.4 crore where as two transformers of 10 MV capacity and related equipment were purchased from Telk, Angamaly. On completion, it will be a combination of both conventional and the gas-insulated sub-station. Once the installations are completed, the KSEB will connect a 110 KV line from its Kalamassery-Chalakkudy feeder line with the help of 10 towers. The company has already deposited Rs 3.5 crore with KSEB for this requirement. The total expenditure for developing the facility is estimated to be around Rs.30 crore. Last year, CIAL consumed about 151.48 lakh units of electricity from KSEB at a cost of Rs.4.71 a unit while it purchased about 1.31 lakh units produced through generators at a cost of Rs.12.65 a unit. The energy overheads by the company is set to increase further this year as a number of projects, including the Airport Museum, trade fair and convention hall, are nearing completion and are slated to be inaugurated during the period.
