Grand opening planned for Alva's Virasat

POETRY IN MOTION:Nirupama and Rajendran Kathak will perform on the opening day of the Alva's Virasat in Moodbidri on January 11.

MANGALORE: Dances from Malaysian and Sri Lankan theatre groups, special fusion concerts of Indian and Western classical music, and a sarod thigalbandi await connoisseurs of music and dance at Alva's Virasat at Moodbidri this year.

In addition, there will be jugalbandis, Kathak and Odissi dances and a variety of dances from other select States.

Alva's Virasat, a six-day national cultural festival featuring classical music concerts, classical and folk dances will begin at Shobhavana, Moodbidri from January 11.

It will be the 19th annual edition of the virasat hosted by Alva's Education Foundation.

Chairman of the foundation M. Mohan Alva told presspersons here on Wednesday that this year's Alva's Virasat Award would be conferred on the renowned carnatic musician K.J. Yesudas. The award carries Rs. 1 lakh cash and a citation. Mr. Yesudas would be the tenth recipient of the award.

After the inaugural ceremony, Kathak dancer duo Nirupama and Rajendra of Abhinava Dance Company, Bangalore, will present Rama Katha Vismaya, a dance programme in which 50 artistes will participate.

January 12: There will be sarod thigalbandi by Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Amaan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan on January 12. They will be accompanied on tabla by Pandit Vijay Ghate. It will be followed by `Varnali', an Odissi group dance by artistes of Rudraksha Foundation, Bhubaneshwar.

January 13: Thursday's programme will commence with a special jugalbandi featuring Jayatheertha Mevundi's Hindustani classical, Abhishek Raghuram's Carnatic classical with Narendra L. Nayak on the harmonium, Mysore V. Sreekanth on the violin, Ramdas Palsule on the tabla and Anantha R. Krishnan on the mrudangam. Ramli Ibrahim and group, Sutra Dance Theatre, Kaulalumpur, Malaysia, will present “vision of forever”, a variety of dances.

January 14: Music lovers can enjoy a jugalbandi on January 14 featuring Tharun Bhattacharya on santoor, Praveen Godkhindi on the bansuri and Vikram Ghosh on the tabla. It will be followed by “Kathak Rang”, colours of Kathak by Ashimbandhu Bhattacharya and party of Kolkata. Later, students of Alva's College will present a variety of dances.

January 15: Special fusion concert of Indian and Western classical music awaits people on the weekend. The participating artistes will be Mysore Manjunath and Mysore Nagaraj on the violin, Ned McGowen on contra base flute, Ramkumar Mishra on tabla, B.C. Manjunath on mrudangam and Giridhar Udupa on ghatam. It will be followed by a 30-member Sri Lankan traditional music and dance from Swajana Cultural Troupe of the island nation.

January 16: The last day of the festival will feature a variety of dances from different States. A team from Jodhpur will present Malkhamb dance; there will be Gatka dance from a troupe from Patiala, Punjab; artistes of Samudra Arts of Thiruvananthapuram will stage cosmic dance of Siva; Rajendra Raval and party from Gujarat will perform Talvar dance; and artistes from Bhargavi dance troupe, Udupi, will present “bhava-yoga-dance”.

Mr. Alva said that except on the inaugural day, all programmes would start at 6 p.m. and end at 10.30 p.m.. The inaugural ceremony would be from 6 p.m. to 7.15 p.m.
