Casuarina cover for more areas

Staff Reporter

Tuticorin: More areas would be covered for planting of casuarina trees (Casuarina equisetifolia) under Tree Cultivation on Private Land scheme in 2011, according to Mr. A. Thomas De Rose, Forest Ranger, Shelter Belt Range, Tuticorin.

Under Emergency Tsunami Reconstruction Project and National Cyclone Risk Mitigation project, 500 ha of casuarina plantation was done after the devastation of Tsunami.

Since casuarina tree species were conducive to the saline soil of Tuticorin district, more trees could be planted. Hence this species was recommended for planting in coastal areas, Mr De Rosesaid.  The casuarina species could also be used for making of scaffolding poles, rafters, cages for mariculture and paper making-industries.Collector C.N. Maheswaran is also keenly interested in promoting Tuticorin as a Green City.
