VELLORE: Vellore Collector C. Rajendran has stressed the importance of education for women in order to bring about their economic development. Inaugurating the district-level cultural competitions for the panchayat-level federation of women's self-help groups (SHGs) organised by the Women's Development Project (WDP) of Vellore district on the VIT University campus here on Tuesday, Mr. Rajendran said members of women's SHGs had multi-responsibilities. The Collector said that women have greater responsibilities than men. There were 22,800 women's SHGs comprising 3.35 lakh members in Vellore district, and their savings totalled Rs.69 crore. Women adopted thrifty habits. G. Viswanathan, Chancellor of VIT presided. Sankar Viswanathan, vice-president (Administration), VIT; Sivagami, Project Officer, Vazhndhu Kattuvom Thittam; Gomathi, District Social Welfare Officer; Thamizhmaran, Project Officer, Centre for Sustainable Rural Development and Research Studies, VIT; C.V. Dharmasivam, Project Officer, WDP spoke.
