CWG scam: CBI searches focus on firms in and around Delhi

NEW DELHI: Stepping up efforts in its ongoing probe into the allegations of financial irregularities in the conduct of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi last October, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday searched a dozen premises across the region of the national capital even as it lodged a fourth FIR in the alleged CWG scam, naming a top CWG official V.K.Verma.
The searches that began on Thursday morning came a day after CWG Organising Committee (OC) chief Suresh Kalmadi was grilled by the CBI for nearly eight hours on his role in awarding contracts for the games as well as the delay in doing so.
Official sources said the CBI raids were focussed on four companies, which had acted as the Indian arm for as many international firms. The contracts were bagged by a consortium of foreign and Indian firms. The sources said a large number of documents, including several in digital format, have been seized from various premises during searches.
