‘Automated Mecanum Wheeled Robot' fetches the students a cash prize of Rs. 75,000 The team will now take part in the World Robot Championship to be held in Singapore VIJAYAWADA: In a rare honour for Andhra Pradesh, a five-member student team of V.R. Siddhartha Engineering College won the first prize at ‘Niyantra 2010', a national level embedded project design contest organised by the National Instruments India, Bangalore. At a function on Friday, the management of VRSEC felicitated the students for enhancing the image of the college by working actively for the Centre of Relevance and Excellence (CORE) in Telematics set up by the Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) on the campus and eventually winning a national level prize. Deepthi, Sowmya, Ramya, Sri Latha and Y. Vivek of ECE branch formed the team that worked under the guidance of ECE head of department K. Sri Rama Krishna, who is also coordinator of the TIFAC CORE. The youngsters got the prize for their project on “Automated Mecanum Wheeled Robot”, which fetched them a cash prize of Rs. 75,000. This is first time a team from AP won such an honour at this event. The same team would now take part in the World Robot Championship 2011 to be held in Singapore in April. Siddhartha Academy of General and Technical Education president S. Vishnuvardhana Rao, secretary N. Venkateswarlu, college convener M. Rajaiah and others said more support would be given to the students, who would come forward to take up such creative and innovative activities, which would bring laurels at national and international levels. Efftronics managing director D. Ramakrishna said the remaining students should draw inspiration from the team that excelled in Niyantra contest while the winning students should concentrate on continuous research and development without becoming inactive. He bemoaned that research and result oriented skills were becoming rare among the students because of the rote learning atmosphere being created even in the professional colleges. This should be changed completely if India had to compete at the global level. B. Jaishankar, managing director of Roboin, announced a prize of Rs. 75,000 on behalf of the company to the winning team. He asked the VRSEC management to develop the campus as a hub for research in robotics.
