Speaker looking into complaints of assault on marshals

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Calling upon the Opposition parties to cooperate with him to ensure smooth functioning of the House, Assembly Speaker R. Avudaiappan said as far as he knew the Opposition parties had not boycotted the Governor's address.

Talking to reporters after the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC), the Speaker confirmed that he had received complaints about the assault on Assembly marshals by an MLA. “It is under my consideration,” he said, but refused to name the MLA.

Mr Avudiaappan said the Opposition members had gone “beyond their limit” and disrupted the Assembly proceedings when the Governor was addressing the House.

“Their attitude saddened me. They should conduct themselves in the manner that will uphold the decorum of the House,” he added.

The Assembly proceedings, he said, will go on up to January 13. All the days will have normal agenda, including question hour and debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor for his address.

Interim budget

The interim budget for 2011-12 will be presented in the House on February 4.

Asked why action had not been taken against K. Selvam under anti-defection laws for joining the Congress after being elected to the House as a representative of Viduthalai Chirthaikal Katchi (VCK), Mr. Avudaiappan said the VCK had not launched any formal complaint against him.

“I need proof,” when told that Mr. Selvam had been attending Congress meetings including the meeting of Congress MLAs.
