KHAMMAM: Work on the proposed sixth stage of Kothagudem Thermal Power Station (KTPS) at Palvancha is going on at a brisk pace to commission the unit by the revised deadline of March 31.

However, the task appears to be tough for the executing firms as little time is left for carrying out the crucial mandatory process of synchronisation of the new unit before its commissioning.

The construction of the 500 MW unit was started at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,203 crore in July, 2007. The expansion project was initiated as part of an ambitious plan of APGENCO to increase the installed capacity of KTPS from the existing 1220 MW to 1720 MW and thereby enable the station to attain the coveted status of super thermal power plant.

Sources said the unit was originally scheduled to be commissioned by February 2010. However, its construction was delayed due to factors like non-availability of skilled workforce, agitations by a section of workers, late arrival of key equipment like for installation in the unit besides heavy rain, particularly during the last year, the sources said.

The works gained momentum mainly after the visit of APGENCO Managing Director K Vijayanand to the KTPS in November last. Taking a cue from the directions of the M D, the executing agencies concerned have stepped up the pace of works under the supervision of KTPS officials to synchronise it by January 31 and commission it by March 31.

Milestones

“Important milestones like lighting up the boiler were completed during the fag end of last year,” said Chief Engineer (O & M) of KTPS V and the upcoming VI stage M Raghavender Rao.

When contacted, Mr Rao said most of civil works were completed. Mechanical, electrical and other related works are progressing at a rapid pace, he said.

The works in respect of cooling tower (163 metres) and chimney (275 metres) are in advanced stages of completion. Efforts are under way to synchronise the unit with the grid and commission it soon as per the revised schedule, he said.
