Free medicine distribution for elephantiasis
Staff Correspondent
Bijapur: The three-day seventh round of the campaign against elephantiasis through mass administration of the DEC tables will begin in Bijapur district from January 10, said Deputy Commissioner S.S. Pattanashetty.
Speaking at district-level officers' meeting here on Friday to discuss preparation for distribution of medicines, he said the officials of the health department should conduct awareness programmes in all the taluks to convince people about the campaign launched by the district administration.
“The campaign of distributing free medicines for elephantiasis was launched in nine districts of north Karnataka in 2004 and so far these districts have completed six rounds of the campaign,” he said.
There are plans to distribute these free medicines to over 13 lakh people in 560 villages of the district through 48 primary health centres. As many as 5,872 personnel have been deputed for the campaign. In order to tackle any emergency situation, separate teams of medical staff have been formed in all the taluks, Mr. Pattanashetty added.
