EC to hold review meetings for West Bengal polls today

Kolkata: Against the backdrop of the ghastly Lalgarh incident on Friday, Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi and his five-member team will arrive in Kolkata on Saturday for a review meeting on the forthcoming general elections to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.

The Election Commission team will meet representatives of nine political parties, as also senior and district police officers, capping their day with a meeting with the State Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, the Director-General of Police and the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata.

The meeting with the political parties is likely to be taken up by Election Commissioner H.S. Brahma, Deputy Election Commissioners Vinod Zutshi and Dr. Alok Shukla and P.K. Dash, Director-General (Election Expenditure).

10-minute slot

A 10-minute slot has been allotted to each political party sequentially. The parties include the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and its allies in the ruling Left Front coalition government in the State. Meetings would also be held with the Trinamool Congress, the Indian National Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Bahujan Samaj party.

The review meeting regarding the ensuing polls would be taken by Dr. Quraishi and Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath. While a round of meeting has been fixed between Election Commissioner H.C. Brahma and Deputy Election Commissioner Vinod Zutshi with the district election officials, police superintendents, Range DIGs and Zonal IGs besides with Chief Secretary, DGP and City Police Commissioner in the morning, a half-an-hour slot has been reserved for an evening conclave with the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, DGP and CP.
