Road Safety Patrol volunteers taking out a rally on Avanashi Road in the city on Friday to mark the Road Safety Week celebrations. Coimbatore: Nearly 2,000 students who are part of Road Safety Patrol Units in 59 schools in the city took out an awareness rally from Lakshmi Mills Junction to VOC Park grounds as part of the road safety week celebrations. The rally was organised by the Coimbatore City Unit of the Tamil Nadu Police Traffic Wardens Organisation. The rally was flagged off by City Police Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu in the presence of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) N. Kamini and A. Mahesh, Chief Traffic Warden. The objective of the rally was to generate awareness among the motorists and road users on the need for obeying road rules. The participants in the rally urged the motorists to avoid drunken driving, wear helmets and to avoid cellular phones while driving. Mr. Sylendra Babu gave away prizes to students who won various competitions conducted as part of the Ananda Salai-Vibathillatha Kovai programme at VOC park grounds. He also gave away the first aid kit to auto rickshaw drivers sponsored by Inner Wheel Club of Coimbatore West and Rotaract Club of Sai Baba Colony. In addition, the Sankara Eye Care centre conducted a free eye screening camp for the drivers.
