KOLKATA: West Bengal Governor M.K. Narayanan on Friday came down strongly on “the circle of bloodshed [which] has been expanding in the State.”
Expressing concern over the violence at Netai village in the Lalgarh area of Paschim Medinipur district on Friday, he said: “It is a day of sorrow and shame.”
In a statement, the Governor said, “For sometime now, reports have been appearing almost daily in the media about political violence from our State. With unfailing regularity each day begins and ends with news of political clashes in different areas of the State. Hardly a district remains unscarred by such conflict.”
Stating a list of places in different parts of the State that were witnessing such violence, he described the Friday's killing as a “carnage that by now has claimed seven lives.”
Mr. Narayanan said: “Not even mothers and daughters have been spared. No democracy can allow such violence. No civilised society can tolerate such wanton disregard for human lives and no State can accept such mindless discord.
“This has gone on for far too long. It is incumbent on the authorities to being to act decisively to pre-empt, prevent or quell attempts at violence, irrespective of the affiliation of the groups involved. A decisive stage has been reached for the government to act before it becomes a point a no return.”
