Customs bounces back to down ICF

CHENNAI: Customs bounced back in time to beat ICF over the distance in a men's match of the SRM-Chennai district ‘A' division volleyball league here on Friday. Customs won 25-23, 18-25, 21-25, 25-20, 15-8.

Earlier, IOB maintained its clean record with another win, this time over Indian Bank.

IOB is the only unbeaten side till date, with six wins from as many matches. In the women's section, Dr. Sivanthi Club kept its all-win record going with a 25-17, 25-22 win over GKM.

Other results: Men: Southern Railway bt SDAT 25-19, 25-23, 15-18; IOB bt Indian Bank 25-15, 25-16, 25-19.

Women: St Joseph's College of Engineering bt SDAT 26-24, 25-23 .

Prithivir scalps four

S. Prithivir with a four-wicket haul ensured St. Michael's posted a comfortable win over St. John's, Villivakkam in a match in the Vidya Mandir- Sportstar trophy schools cricket tournament here on Friday.

The scores: Don Bosco 226 for four in 30 overs (G.K Shyam 42, Joy Kennedy 42, Antony Andrew 41, A. Sarath Kumar 56) bt Dominic Savio 100 for six in 30 overs (V.N.R Ajithvarma three for 33, M. Naveen three for 21).

St.John s Villivakkam 112 for nine in 30 overs (S. Prithivir four for 22 R. Vigneshvar three for12) lost to St. Michael's 113 for two in 26.4 overs (M. Venkat 48).

Golf tournament

The Rotary Club of Madras (T. Nagar)-Larsen and Toubro second golf tournament will be held at the Madras Gymkhana Club Annexe (Guindy) here on January 11.

The proceeds of the tournament will go to charity.

Around 100 corporates from all over India including former India cricket captain Kapil Dev, a golfer with zero handicap, Ishwar Achanta, International golf referee and film director Mani Ratnam, will be participating in the tournament, which consists of two categories — Handicap 0-12 and 12-24.

Speaking to newspersons on Friday, Rotary (T. Nagar) President K. Ramanujam hoped the event would become a success “to help our fund-raising projects.”

Noble cause

Rtn. Mohan Rajan, said the association between golf and charity will help in roping more corporates which in turn will aid Rotary's charity work, the chief among them being the Rotary Rajan Eye Bank.

Golf Fundraising Committee Chairman Vijay Sheth explained in detail Rotary's charity projects.

K.V. Rangaswami, President, L&T, the title sponsor for the event, spoke about Rotary's charity activities which seek to give back to the society.

“It's our responsibility,” he said.

During the prize distribution function, Kapil Dev will be given the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award' and ‘Vocational Excellence Award' will be given to Ishwar Achanta.

Tennis ace Vijay Amritraj and K. Srikkanth, Chairman of the BCCI selection committee will also be present at the function.

Pramila-Hindu Shree duo wins

The duo of Pramila Mathews and Hindu Shree clinched the women's pairs title in the IOB-Madras Gymkhana Club Open State-level bridge tournament at the Club premises here on Friday.

R.N. Subramanian and Kalyaniiswaran duo won the mixed pairs event on Thursday.

Other results: women's pairs: 2. Kamala Sattanathan & Padmini Diwakaran; 3. Lakshmi Chari & Sherien Ryan.

Mixed pairs: 1. R.N. Subramanian & Kalyaniiswaran; 2. Satya & Selva,;3. B.S. Madhukar & Leela Iyengar .
