PALAKKAD: The Kerala State Tamil Protection Council in a representation to Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and leaders of all major political parties on Monday requested that a holiday be declared in Palakkad district and Tamil linguistic minority areas like Idukki and Thiruvananthapuram on the Makarapongal (Thaipongal) day on January 15, which is the New Year day of Tamils. The council said the Kerala government had sanctioned restricted holiday on Pongal day for government employees, students and teachers. But this was of help to only a small section of the Tamil linguistic minorities in Palakkad district.
