Good spell by Naha

Bangalore: Iqlas Naha's fine spell delivered Presidency School (R.T. Nagar) a place in the last four of the KSCA under-16 inter-school tournament, with a 63-run victory over Delhi Public School (South) in the quarterfinals here on Monday.

Naha's figures of four for 31 followed batting contributions by Zunaid Khan (74) and Virendar Singh (72) as DPS, in pursuit of 222, was dismissed for 159 in 41.2 overs.

Bishop Cotton Boys School, Bethany High School and St. Joseph's Indian High School also made it to the semifinals with convincing wins.

The scores: Vivekananda School 126 in 29.2 overs (Abbas 46, Naveen 27, A. Sachin four for 42, R.S. Karthikeyan three for 20) lost to Bishop Cotton Boys School 127 for three in 33.2 overs (K.A. Rakshith 49 n.o., Purva 34).

Bethany HS 171 for eight in 50 overs (K. Amith 35, H. Ashwin 25, G. Abhishek 24 n.o.) bt Presidency School (Nandini Layout) 135 in 35.3 overs (Zaffaruddin 54, Adithya Reddy three for 15).

Presidency School (R.T. Nagar) 222 in 48.2 overs (Zunaid Khan 74, Virendar Singh 72, Kashyap three for 30, Ankush five for 31) bt DPS (South) 159 in 41.2 overs (M. Vineeth 43, Iqlas Naha four for 31).

St. Joseph's Boys HS 223 for nine in 50 overs (Saneeth Noronha 92, Kunal P. Sanghvi 92, G.R. Abhay three for 37) lost to St. Joseph's Indian HS 224 for four in 43.5 overs (Safi Siddique 97, Anirudh Chakravarthy 40, H. Mohan 37 n.o.).

Thrilling win for IOCL

Qualifiers MEG fought for all its worth but time ran out as IOCL snatched a thrilling 6-5 win in the second phase of the Ozonegroup Super Division hockey league at the KSHA Stadium here on Monday.

The Sappers, undeterred by the reputation and the presence of international in the rival ranks, matched IOCL goal for goal until V.R. Raghunath struck three in quick succession to take the game away. But the Sappers came by two goals in the last eight minutes to make it 5-6 but that was as far as it could go.

The results: IOCL 6 (Roshan Minz 6, Gagandeep (Jr) 20, V.R Raghunath 23, 26, 36; Rajpal Singh 24) bt MEG 5 (Muthanna 9, 10; Poovanna 34, 63; Sagay Jayaseelan 66).

Fortis 4 (Diwakar Ram 9, Bikas Topno 18, Narad 39, Pramod 53) bt ASC 2 (K.P. Deepu 52, Harpreet Singh 68).

OnMobile wins

OnMobile clinched a final spot through bowl out and then easily defeated United Spirits to win the National Insurance Trophy in the 11th edition of the Bangalore Sports Club-conducted Corporate CrickEight tournament here on Sunday.

The scores: National Insurance Trophy: Final: OnMobile 85 for two in eight overs bt United Spirits 53 (Sanjay three for six). Semifinals: OnMobile 82 for six (Pramod 32) bt Manipal Group 82 for three (through bowl out); PWC 72 for two lost to United Spirits 74 for one. Bhoba Trophy: Final: ABB 95 for six (Aravind 39 n.o.) bt Metlife 84 for two. ICICI Group Trophy: Final: Brigade Group 58 for two lost to HP 60 for one .

Gabriel dead

Marian Gabriel, silver medallist in the 200 metres at the inaugural Asian games in Delhi (1951), died here at the CSI Hospital after prolonged sickness. He was 84.

Gabriel, who won a 4x100 metres relay silver at the same Games and a bronze at the Manila Asian Games in 1954 was selected to represent the country at the Helsinki Olympics as well, but could not make the trip due to illness. He suffered from acute respiratory problems. Karnataka Athletic Association (KAA) has condoled the death of the former International athlete.
